Your first steps in staying safe while driving during the winter months begins before you even hit the road.
- Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition so you will be less likely to break down.
- MAKE SURE YOUR TAILPIPE IS NOT CLOGGED WITH SNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE! Defrost your windows completely to improve visibility. While your car is heating up, you can remove snow and ice from the outside with a plastic ice scraper and snow brush. Make sure to brush off your mirrors, headlights, and tail lights.
- Drive more slowly than usual. Plan ahead to allow more time to reach your destination.
- Allow extra time to stop when approaching a traffic light, stop sign or any intersection.
- Be aware of other drivers. Just because you are being extra cautious doesn’t mean everyone else is as well.
- If you start to skid, keep your foot off of the gas and the brakes. Point your steering wheel in the direction that you want to go.
- If you get stuck, avoid spinning your wheels and digging yourself in deeper. Get out your winter emergency supplies to assist in getting out.
